history of 458 socom ammo

The .458 SOCOM cartridge was developed in the early 2000s by Marty ter Weeme, a former member of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit. He wanted to create a cartridge that could deliver large amounts of energy on target, while still being compatible with the AR-15 platform.

Ter Weeme achieved this by necking down the .50 Beowulf cartridge to accept .458-inch bullets. The resulting cartridge had a shorter case length and could be used in standard AR-15 magazines.

The .458 SOCOM quickly gained popularity among hunters and tactical shooters who appreciated its power and versatility. It has since been used in a variety of applications, including hunting large game, home defense, and military operations.

Today, the .458 SOCOM is widely available from a variety of manufacturers and is considered one of the most effective short-range cartridges available. Its popularity continues to grow as more shooters discover its benefits.

Can I use 458 socom ammo and 50 beowulf ammo:

In this cartridge comparison of the .458 SOCOM vs .50 Beowulf, we are going to take a look at how these two cartridges, which often compete in the same shooting niches, compare to each other in a variety of ballistic and other performance categories.

Because these two cartridges share a lot of similarities, it can be easy to get on the track of determining which is the better cartridge.

That is not our goal in this article. Unlike other comparison attempts, we want to bring an unbiased look at these two cartridges to the table.

With this information, you can better make your own decision.

In the end, your cartridge selection often comes down to personal preference after using both.

Arguments will abound from both sides of the aisle concerning which cartridge is preferable.

We are also only looking at items that are measurable.

Availability of components to outfit your rifle for these cartridges, how they feed, and other factors are not going to be discussed here.

In the end, it comes down to what you have the most confidence with, especially when looking at two similar rounds.

A Brief History Of This 458 socom:

The 458 SOCOM was designed for a very specific purpose.

As the acronym implies (Special Operations Command), members of special operations units were unhappy with the 5.56 rounds ability to bring down the enemy quickly and with as few shots as possible in combat while using platforms such as the M4 and M16.

After deliberations and experimentation, the .458 SOCOM came to be in the early 2000’s.

This 40mm long case was designed to be fitted with the much larger .458 diameter bullets that produce dramatically

more force than the 5.56 rounds but still able to be used with an AR magazine and a specialized .458 SOCOM upper receiver.

The cartridge has found some popularity in the civilian shooting world as well and is very popular among AR enthusiasts and hand loaders.

yrs  The .458 SOCOM has been touted as an excellent low-velocity home defense round as well as a great brush gun.

There are several companies producing factory loaded .458 SOCOM cartridges, but the availability is limited.

The majority of these rounds come in bullet weights ranging between 300-500gr with subsonic rounds available.

The 450 Bushmaster and 458 SOCOM have similar ballistic performance out to 250 yards, which is the maximum effective range for both rifle cartridges.
However, the 450 Bushmaster has a flatter trajectory as it fires lighter bullets at higher muzzle velocities.
The 458 SOCOM also has slightly more recoil.
Is 458 SOCOM accurate?
Accurate, hard-hitting and reliable, the . 458 SOCOM is definitely one to consider if you are considering a big-bore AR-15.
At the muzzle, the 458 SOCOM bullet delivers a whopping 2,243 ft-lbs of kinetic energy compared to 1,282 ft-lbs for the 5.56. Although the 458 SOCOM round has almost double the kinetic energy at the muzzle, the round quickly loses fps and ft-lbs of energy as it travels downrange due to its bullet design.

Overview of 458 SOCOM Ammo

The 458 SOCOM ammunition was developed largely due to the lack of powder charge in the 5.56 NATO round.

After talks between special forces troops after Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu, they determined they needed a cartridge with more power because the Somalis they were fighting would chew Khat all day, which curbs appetite and increases pain tolerance making it seem like the 5.56 NATO round was more ineffective than it truly was.

458 socom headstamp

In 2000 Marty ter Weeme completed the cartridge design and Tromix was contracted to build the first .458 SOCOM rifle and it was released in February 2001.

Why is it called 458 SOCOM?

458 SOCOM naming convention is quite simple. 458 refers to the bullet diameter of .458 inches. SOCOM comes from the special operations command who initially had the idea and desire to make the round.

Purpose

The general purpose of developing the 458 SOCOM was to create a round that was completely compatible with the M4 Carbine but have more stopping power than the 5.56 NATO.

The 458 SOCOM in its final form is a lengthened .50 AE case. Even the original prototypes bore the .50 AE headstamp which caused confusion initially because the case is longer and has a narrower rim.

This cartridge is a great brush gun as well as a low-velocity home defense cartridge.

Most of the bullet weights range from 300 to 500 grain with several major manufacturers making factory ammo this is definitely a good contender for many situations.

Performance

The performance of this round really shines within 200 yards.

At 100 yards this round is traveling at 1512.2 ft per second with 1776.2 feet lbs on target, you’ve got to love those feet lbs on target if you’re an American.

Guns that Shoot 458 SOCOM Ammo

The 458 round was created to run in an M4 Carbine so nearly any M4 can run it but the upper will have to be specific for the 458 SOCOM.

The magazines and lowers are completely interchangeable with this cartridge.

You can see the full offering of 458 SOCOM on Guns.com.

CMMG Resolute in 458 SOCOM

resolute 458 socom

The CMMG Resolute is one of the many AR-15 style rifles you can get chambered in 458 SOCOM.

The Resolute rifle is your standard AR-15 platform rifle but built for 458 SOCOM.

Palmetto State Armory often has them in stock.

Wilson Combat AR-15 Recon Rifle

If you are a big believer in brands then you’ll likely love Wilson Combat’s 458 offering in this caliber.

This gun is available in several different lengths and comes with some extra bells and whistles so the nearly $2,400 price point isn’t as hard to stomach.

You can typically find the Wilson Combat Recon Rifle on Brownells.

458 SOCOM Ammo Price and Availability

Availability is almost a cuss word now in the gun world as ammo manufacturers work tirelessly to catch up to consumer demand as people stockpile ammo and continue to want to train, hunt, and practice shooting.

As of this writing, you can typically find these rounds for $3.65 /round and they typically come in 20 round boxes. That’s a bit higher than other alternative AR-15 platform calibers such as 300 blackout.

You can typically find the 458 SOCOM on Brownells or at Palmetto State Armory. I would also look at Lucky Gunner as they have a solid selection of ammo.

Some of the major manufacturers making 458 SOCOM ammo are Buffalo Bore, Federal, and SBR Ammo.

Reloading 458 SOCOM

Many people who have adopted the 458 SOCOM round have also taken to reloading the round.

There are two major companies making dies for the 458 SOCOM the Hornady 2 Die Set and the Lee Full Length set.

Most people will save and reload their own brass casings but you can also buy brass all over the internet. From used to brand new brass cases.

HISTORY OF 458 socom AMMO CARTRIDGES

Bill Alexander and Janne Pohjoispaa jointly created the 458 Hunting Ammo. This load was unveiled and tested in 2003 at the Blackwater Training Facility in North Carolina, where it remained supersonic at 1,200 yards (1,100 m) range and out-shot the 7.62mm NATO with only half the recoil. The main aim behind the invention of this cartridge was to create an effective STANAG magazine-length load for the AR-15 platform that could shoot at a range beyond 800 yards that is above 730m and with performance above the 223 Remington/5.56mm NATO round. This cartridge faced difficulties being accepted in the community of hunters for several reasons, one being that Alexander trademarked the name of the load. To solve the problem mentioned earlier, Alexander Bill in 2011 relinquished the trademark when the load gained SAAMI approval, enabling other companies to produce barrels, grendel ammo with the acronym 6.5 Grendel Ammo bulk 500 Rounds.

Given the tight restriction of STANAG magazine size, the Grendel designer opted for a shorter, wider case to fit more powder while leaving space for its long, high ballistic coefficient 65mm rounds. The weight of this load ranges from 90 gr to 130 gr with muzzle velocity ranging between 2300 ft/s for the 129 gr and 130 gr and 2900 ft/s muzzle velocity for the 77 and 90 gr round. The 6.5 Grendel round can weigh anywhere from 227 to 275 grains depending on the case material and bullet weight.

.458 SOCOM AMMO HISTORY

The 458 SOCOM (aka: 11.5x40mm RB) is a large caliber cartridge designed for use on the AR15/M4 platform. It was developed by Marty ter Weeme, founder of Teppo Jutsu LLC in 2000. The impetus was an informal (“beer and barbeque”) discussion with a senior member of the US special operations community regarding the apparent lack of effectiveness of the 5.56 x 45 rifle cartridge in a recent conflict. In particular, the reports from members of Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia as part of Operation Gothic Serpent that multiple shots were required to neutralize members of the opposing force led to the request to develop a new cartridge that would deliver far more energy from short barrels at relatively short distances.

The project sponsor set forth a number of specific requirements namely that the cartridge had to fit in the M4 carbine and be capable of firing heavy-for-caliber projectiles at subsonic velocity using suppressors. During the development phase, various other cartridges were considered and proposed to the project sponsor, but rejected as not meeting all the requirements. The cartridges considered were 7.62×39mm, 9×39mm Grom, .45 Professional (which has since become the .450 Bushmaster), and .50 Action Express. At the time, the .499 LWR cartridge was still in the development phase and had not been chambered commercially.

Excellent product that goes “bang” every time. Very consistent results from load to load. One primer for magnum and standard large pistol rounds simplifies my inventory situation. Try them and you’ll love them also.

  10. peter

Remington primers are my favorite whether the smallest or the largest and all in between. I have never had one fail in four decades.

  11. reln

Don’t let the lower price on these rounds full you. I have uses many of these rounds with zero issues and I have gotten some of my best groupings with this ammo.

  12. dareln

I ordered 5K of these LPPs when they were on sale hoping they would be good performers in my 45acp reloads. I am not disappointed! They are easy to seat (I thought too easy at first) and I am pleased with their performance. Every primer has fired so far… several hundred loaded and shot so far. I find these equal or better in quality to CCI LPPs. Great product

  13. partson

I use this ammo all the time, among with many other brands as well. We have a shooting camp for kids. The waxy feel is normal and used by many manufacturers and it causes no issues. 22 guns need to be cleaned often to avoid build up. This is great ammo when you can get it.

  14. vannick625

I purchase these primers mostly because they were such a great deal. I have been pleased with performance. Ignition has been 100% so far (several hundred shot) and they are very easy to seat. At first I thought too easy, but I’ve had no problems at all in that regard. I find Remington LPPs to be equal to CCIs or Tula products. Look for your best deal and buy!

  15. arnold

Bought the this on black Friday, went to the range the following Monday and while loading my mag I noticed my fingers were getting waxy.but finally sorted out the issue. Great Buy

  20. luke89

Excellent primer. Very consistent priming and to date I have never had a bad primer.. thats 40+ years and over 100,000 Remington primers.

  21. ray98

I bought this ammo because of the reviews that I saw were all good, so far it has performed excellent.

  22. nathalie

Use these primers for my 45 acp. Good functionality with no problems encountered. Don’t know of anything really negative to say about this product.

  23. george

I am not even sure how many of these I have (quite a few) but to keep it short you cannot beat them.

  24. swin89

I started reloading at age 11. I’m 61 now and shoot 15000 reloads a year down from 30M or so when I was a Law Enforcement competitor. Now as then always Remington Primed. They’ve never let me down…..unless it was my fault. I’ve tried other brands but feel like I’m cheating on my wife when I do. Nothing is like Remington.

Super great, I have built 8 off of these with mixed lower kits, they are flawless. Just as good as the lowers triple the price !!!

  26. licd

My order for the #2 1/2 Remington primers was to add to my current supply. I’ve used the Rem #21/2 for 35 years of reloading and have never been disappointed.

  27. cherry

Great receiver! Bought 6 of these and have built up 4 already, all with the same great results.

These are my choice for all the 45 ACP I load. I load a lot, shoot a lot, and these Remington primers NEVER let me down. The package/trays are very small and store more efficiently.

  29. kingsley

Machine work is excellent and fit and finish is what you expect from a good receiver. Different brand upper receivers pin on with virtually no play. Buy a few because at this price you can’t go wrong.

As a revolver shooter it was important to find a primer with a soft cup to replace Federal primers. The Winchester primers work fine which is important in speed competitions.

  31. samley

Very pleased with this, fired around 2 loads out of it with 0 mag problems.

  32. samh

I am a retired police officer. when I was issued my m4 for patrol use it only had one mag with it, when I ask for another the Lt. stated one was enough. well I went to a local gun shop and the sales person stated he had a large selection. he then handed me a c mag and said try this one. I went to the range that week and well it worked as good as the factory bushmaster mag that came with the rifle. I went to the shop paid for that one and bought two more. they served me well for the next five years and when I retired two years ago I took my mag’s and I am glade to say they still work like new today.

Winchester primers have been around longer than I have and have always done the job exactly as expected. I will continue to use them.

  35. micheal34

  36. hinds

  38. vin2

I have been re-loading since 1978. Winchester primers are my go to primer when they are available. Very consistent in ignition and superior in performance overall.
